Tongue-tie

Jo is almost 3 years old but his speech development still slightly lagging behind. He can speak but he has problems with some of the words pronunciation especially "s" and "f" sounds. I had been thinking he might outgrow the problems as he grows, but he still having the problems though the couple of months had past. I tried hard to rectify his pronunciation and till sometimes he really made my blood boiled. Though i know that's no point to raise my voice to him, i understand he been trying hard but still can't get the exact pronunciation.

Kids take time to learn something new and even it takes time to help a weak kid into a right pace. I know the rule but just can't control myself to scold him. I guess my unconsciously reacted might pressure him and have been making him so reluctant to improve his speech development.

I told his paed about his situation on last Monday (29 Jan 07) when Jo was having his JE last jab. Doctor checking his tongue and confirmed me that he has a minor tongue-tie problem. Doctor assured me that 80% of kids with tongue-tie problem will outgrow their speech problems when their grow up. Tongue-tie problem will even get distinctly when the kid reaches to 7 or 8 years old, then only a minor surgery is required for the tongue. So i really hope my Jo will be one of them out of this 80%.

I found another problem after the speech episode. I am suspecting Jo has color-blindness problem after been playing few times of color matching with him. He can't differentiate the blue and green colors when i asking him to find their pairs. He would match blue with green but others are fine in matching.

I told my hubby about this color-blindness problem over the phone, he sounded angrily and complaining me always over acting a little issue. But as a mother, what should i do when i found something abnormal, can't tell and discuss with hubby then who should i head to?

Do you believe that when you saying something about other kids then your kid might get the same problem? I really hope some people can stop criticizing others...

I think it's mother's natural instinct to be worried about our kids' development. And it's father's natural instinct to say that we are over reacting.

But when there is realy something wrong with the kids, the fathers would have to EAT their words liao....I always say, better be safe than sorry!

I agreed with Jan, trust a mother's instinct, if you sense that something is not right, bring Jo for a check up. That will put your mind at ease.

Yeah, agreed with checking with pead 1st like all mommies suggested and don't jump into conclusion and scare yourself.

Oh God..u must be worried sick..i understand how you feel - especially when u are so worried but others think that u are over-reacting. Why not send Jo for a check then? At least u know the answer than worrying here.

It's always mummies that worry more than daddies. Do check with his PD to ease your mind. Hope things turn out well for you. Now that you are pregnant, pls do take care and don't be too stress ya :)

heehee..don't worry! My husband is colour blind also!

My husband has alot of problems when the colours are mixed (eg :green - blue+yellow, brown)..so he often asks me what colour is his t-shirt..etc. It is very very endearing.

One day, he came back with PURPLE glasses..and ask me nice or not? I asked him...ermmm..u know what colour or not? He said, Dark Blue. I laugh and laugh and laugh..poor thing. I told him Dark Purple la!!!

DOn't worry abt his speech problem..also. My boy still got so much problems talking properly..Aiya.. nvm la..just repeat what he says, clearly..and hope he will follow u!

hey dear, don't worry so much OK...pronounciation is one thing that they will grow out of it. even sometimes we adult get tongue twisted rite.

as for colour blind, maybe u want to run some test to pre-check? http://colorvisiontesting.com/online%20test.htm

well, i think it's always good to suspect, then we clarify to make sure. better detect early and find a cure rite if it is. Don't worry OK, probably he haven't grasp the concept of colour only.

i agree with jan - as mothers...i think we may be sometimes too worried ..i think it's normal that we feel this way

Agreed that as a mother, we tend to worry more even over slightest thing. I think it is normal reaction from a mother. But if you really think there is a problem, then should seek professional help.Give Jo another year, then reassess him again over speech and color. Some at his age on average only identify 3-4 colors. No worries, monitor him and see how he fares.

Firstly, I agree that we mothers are more sensitive to our kids than daddies. But I don't think if we say something about other kids, we'll get the some problem on our own.

As for colour blind, that can be confirmed by your paed right?

Mommies are like that. We all worry about developments, weight, how much they eat etc. As for Men, they will always think that we over react.

Whatever is the case, go and seek a professional's advise.

Hui sia, dun worry too much n put too much pressure on Jo. If you are in doubts, check with ur pead again on next visit. I once thought bb has color blind too as he has the same prob with Jo but now I know, I was just too worried.

Of coz hubs love jo n u but worried abt u being too stress up that's why reacted that way.

Is better that you find out thing earlier so you can help Jo than later. But don't be too stress about it. Take care ya mummy, there is another lil one inside of you needing your TLC as well. :)

Hey, you're doing a wonderful job worrying for Jo. After all, mommy knows best! But don't be too stress out at the same time...pronounciations at his age still can be improved. I had a nephew who wouldn't talk until he was 3 and his parents were not even worried!!! Now, he yaks non stop :)

leave to God to worry...men will not feel what we feel one..waste time talking to them!

It is normal that mummy will notice things on the child more. After all, females are more meticulous. Best to raise all this with the paed.

Speech development..it takes time. My son has speech delay...we can only encourage and hope slowly he will improve.

Colour blindness...go check with teh doctor. I have some guy friends who are colour blind but they are alright.

Don't stress yourself out worrying about this and that. But it's easier said than done. I always worry about Qianyi's speech developement too. She's a late talker but she can pronounce S and F. Give Jo some time. He'll get to pronounce them correctly soon. As for his colour blindness, I think you better check with doctor.

hey huisia, dun wory ok...last time we oso worry Thad is slow in his language pronounciation. BUt now he is talking a lot. hehe..try to read/repeat clear the word that Jo make mistake.
For the color-blind, why not chk n discuss with Jo's paed? Mayb he can give any checking to Jo??
Cheers ya...

Don't worry HuiSia. It's just your suspicion only on Jo's color blindness. Don't be like me kiasu kiasi okay.. I'm sure Jo is alright. :)

Color blind is not a big issue, it is not life or death condition. Praise God that He blessed you with a healthy and cheerful boy. :D

I super good in color blind probabilities... hahaha, cuz my father was color blind, so I checked on this...

HS, your son is not abnormal. It's very normal. Lots of people have these. My hubby is a little tongue-tie too - he can't pronounce some English word accurately, partly is also bcoz his English is poorlah. And yes, he always blame his tongue lor! I want to introduce u an exercise for tongue. My sis taught us, she learnt it from her montessori course. It helps little children so that they can have a flexible tounge and thus can pronounce better.

It's simple. Something we all have done when we were kids. U know when we want to tease other kids be go blablublablu...our tongue go in and out in between our teeth and lips...we do that very fast, and we sounds like red indian... It looks rude if we do it infront of other people, but it's a good exercise for tongue.

I dont think it is colour blindness as he only confuses blue and green. As long as he can see red and green, means he has passed the test!

But as a mother, I can understand your concerns. Just have a check, so you can have a piece of mind.
Take care

I think shouldnt worry too much. Colour blind usually cant detect red colours most of the time (at least from what I know and things that I read) Perhaps give it a try again when he gets a little bit older.

Don't worry.. I think he'll out grow it.

Yeah.. I believe that if you criticise other ppl's kids, your kids also will kena the same thing. That's why I dare not comment on some ppl's kids.. b'cos I still have two young ones.
